8-wheel all-wheel drive, 500-horsepower 10-cylinder engine, ZF 16-speed, what kind of truck will you think of when you hear these? For a moment I didn’t know what monster truck this was, but it was definitely a top-of-the-line presence. Today, I will show you the “king” born in the 1980s – the NG4850 large truck.
NG80 Classic Cab Rugged Solid Bumper
As a classic model of the old generation, the NG80 is distinguished by its unique cab shape at a glance. Don’t look at the old cab, the sun visor and the air shroud are not bad, and the configuration is basically the same as that of modern trucks.
The unassuming bumper below is not a retrofit, but an original Mercedes-Benz. Although large vehicles have vehicle escorts when they go out, with this bumper, the V10 engine located under the cab can be better protected. And the car is about 30 years old, and the bumper is still not rusted, which shows that the quality is really good.
The tow pin in the center of the lower bumper has been removed.
The headlights below are unpretentious in shape, with a single light bowl and double light bulbs. From the LOGO on the lamp housing, it can be seen that the headlights are made by Hella in Germany and belong to an old lamp factory.
The cab is a classic NG80 cab that dates back to the 1970s and 1980s. And as a model introduced with technology that year, the shadow of the NG80 can still be found on some Chinese-made trucks. The 4850 logo can be seen on the side door, and there is LIMITED in English below, indicating that this is a limited-edition model.
We checked the data and learned that the NG series large trucks have been produced since the 1980s. In addition to the NG4850, there are other models such as the NG3850 and NG4050. The NG3850 is designed to have a total drag weight of 220 tons, and the 4850 is 250 tons.
V10 engine 8-wheel all-wheel drive
The NG4850 is powered by its own V10 engine, model OM423 V10, with a displacement of 18.273L.
The early OM423 V10 was a self-priming engine with only 355 hp and 470 hp, and a smaller torque of 1304 Nm.
The NG4850 we photographed is equipped with a later turbo version, model OM423LA V10, with a maximum horsepower of 500 horsepower and a slightly smaller torque of 2000 Nm. But speaking of this, it was the driving force of the 1980s. Do you think it is fierce or not?
The equipped transmission is provided by ZF, with 16 gears and model ZF16S. I don’t know whether it is 160A or 190. If you know it, you can leave a message. Shifting is the same as the current manual transmission model. The gear shift method is also pasted on the cab dashboard with stickers, which are still very well preserved.
Are 16 gears enough for large transportation? Of course not. If the traditional friction clutch is used, it may be scrapped soon, so it is necessary to use something like a liquid buffer that can “displace a thousand pounds”. The 16-speed transmission here is equipped with ZF’s own WSK400 torque converter.
ZF WSK torque converters are available in two models, 400 and 440. The numbers refer to the diameter of the torque converter, ie 400mm and 440mm. The larger the diameter, the more torque the torque converter transmits.
According to ZF, the WSK440 has a torque amplification factor of 1.58 and a built-in hydraulic retarder.
As an 8×8 model, the transfer case is a must. The power output from the transmission is first sent to the transfer case and then to the four axles through the propeller shaft.
The heavy leaf springs pull large pieces like a 100-ton king single horse-riding bolt.
The seat is a mechanical shock-absorbing seat of Isri Huatai. Today, the seat is still in good condition, the base frame is not rusted, and the seat cushion and backrest are not collapsed or damaged.
All kinds of data are displayed on the dashboard, and the icons above are not buttons, but indicators. Don’t look at such an old instrument panel, there are knobs to adjust the intensity of the display lights.
There is also a small sleeper behind the driver’s seat, but for this kind of vehicle, the utilization rate of the sleeper is not expected to be high, and it doesn’t matter if it is small.
